wednesday, the houses of gaga and cash

Contemporary Media Industries

Todays lecture was about the Pop Video

We watched Lady Gaga's "Bad Romance" music video. It is a beautiful piece of moving Art. I loved analysing the video and discovering all the references to other artists.

In "Bad Romance" there are references to the film "Alien," famous fashion designers and vodka. Gaga wears razor sunglasses which she designed and said they are "my shield, this is my weapon, this is my inner sense of fame, this is my monster."

Then Mike played us "Hurt" by Johnny Cash (originally written by Nine Inch Nails)
It is an incredibly moving video. Strange how again it is a work of art, very much like Gaga's video signposting to other works of art.

Yet the atmosphere after Johnny Cash compared to Gaga was so different.

In "Bad Romance" Gaga refers to her own 'empire' and being sold by the industry (the shot of computers with figures on the screen). Cash refers to his empire too (images of The House of Cash) but Cash places the thought alongside an alternative, which was essentially the only alternative for him.

I think the strongest image defining that alternative was the shot of Cash, his hand visibly shaking with age and infirmity, pouring the cup of wine over the table.

"You could have it all. My empire of dirt"
